How do you install beadboard?

When installing beadboard panels, first take measurements between your countertop and underneath your cabinets. And you are going to need to do it in several locations because sometimes you will see that they’re not all the same. Calculate how much trim you’ll require. If you do not have and 4” backsplash you will need trims that meet the countertop surfaces, you may want to use trims for the underneath of the upper cabinets. Cut the beadboard to suit the space and to accommodate any outlets. To cut you can use a rip-cut, you can cut outlet spaces with a jigsaw. Attach the beadboard to the wall. You can use liquid nails on the panels or just use panel glue for them. Cut the trims and place them.

Caulking

To do this you need to clean all the surfaces, wipe the seams of the beadboard with light soap and a moist towel. Before caulking, be careful to remove any soap residue. Then, apply a thin bead of caulking to the area. Apply equal pressure to the caulking gun trigger while running the caulking tube tip along the seams. Keep the tip at a 45-degree angle for a smoother application. Release the trigger just before you reach the end of the seam a little amount of caulking will still push out of the tube after the pressure is removed. In the third step, on the wet caulking, make a concave surface.

Push the tip of your finger down gently along the top of the caulking. This forces the caulking into the crack and results in a smooth finish. After this, remove any extra caulk. Clean any stray caulking from the chair rail or beadboard seams with a moist towel. It is simpler to get rid of this before it dries. Repeat the procedure until all seams are sealed.

Painting

When it comes to painting the beadboard there are several steps. If you’re painting beadboard before it’s installed, prime both the front and back sides to keep moisture out. Allow the primer to completely dry. After the primer has dried, use the 2-inch angle sash brush to paint inside the grooves of the beadboard, beginning at the top and moving down. After you’ve painted the grooves and trim, use a paint roller to paint the flat area of the beadboard. Apply a thin layer of paint in two-foot chunks at a time (this allows you to work with a “wet edge” as you go). You should obtain a lovely smooth finish as long as you use a decent quality roller.

If there is any roughness left by the roller, you may smooth it out by feathering it with your paintbrush—this is known as “back brushing.” Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat. Pull the tape off at a 45-degree angle while the paint is still slightly wet. Allow at least 24 hours for the paint to cure before reintroducing any things into the space. Depending on the temperature and humidity, the paint takes two to four weeks to fully cure. Have fun adorning your new room with your newly painted beadboard.
