Choosing the Right Grout

When it comes to how to grout tile backsplash, the first thing you need to figure out that what kind of grout you will use. To find the right grout for your project, you need to consider two main factors: type and color.

Grout Type

Choosing the grout type depends on the material and the size of the gaps between the tiles. Here are the different types of grout:

Unsanded:

If you are going to apply the grout on a vertical surface like a kitchen backsplash, unsanded grout is one of the most ideal options. Unsanded grout features a smooth texture with fine sand powers. It is recommended to use for smaller grout lines less than 1/8-inch wide. Also, it is a better option for glass, metal, or polished stone tiles. It is more expensive than the sanded grout but if you have narrow grout lines, you should use this one.

Sanded:

Sanded grout is the most common option because it can be suitable for most applications. At this point, sanded grout is recommended to use wider grout lines between 1/8-inch to 3/8-inch wide. Sanded grout features very fine quartz or silica sand grains which give extra strength to the grout to increase durability and reduce shrinkage.

Epoxy:

Epoxy grout is not as common as sanded and unsanded grout but it is a great alternative to a cement-base grout because of its durability. It is resistant to stains, cracks, chemicals, and water damage which is an important point for wet spaces like kitchen backsplashes. The other benefit of this grout type is it doesn’t require sealing. It is recommended to use wider grout lines 3/8-inch to ½-inch wide and it is ideal for terracotta, slate, or stone tiles. But it is more expensive than other options.

Do you grout between backsplash and countertop?

When grouting your backsplash tiles, you don’t need to grout between the backsplash and countertop. But once your grout is dry, you need to caulk between these two surfaces to create a protective layer!

And when using such small-sized mosaic tiles, unsanded grout is the best option. You can use white quartz countertops that seamlessly blend with the tiles and light gray cabinets to create a sleek and elegant foundation.

Grout Color

Once you have decided on your grout type, it is time to consider color options. Choosing the grout color is one of the most important steps of how to grout a tile backsplash. The color of your grout is as important as the color of your tiles because the right color choice can enhance the visual interest of your backsplash! Besides its visual impact, a grout color also affects the daily maintenance requirements of your installation.

  • White is the most popular and common grout color for all types of tiling works. It gives a clean and fresh finish to your tiles and it can be a perfect pair of any colored tiles. However, white grout is more likely to show grease or dirt than darker grout. But, with the right cleaning routine, you can keep it as fresh as the first day!
  • Dark grout, such as black or dark gray is perfect to hide the dirt and they are easier to clean.
  • Besides the classic options such as white, black, or gray, there are plenty of different color options when it comes to grout. You can add a fun look with colorful grout or add a dose of sparkle with gold grout!

When it comes to choosing the grout color, ‘Should grout be darker or lighter than tile?’ is the most frequent question. It all depends on your personal preferences. There are several ways that you can use it.

Matching Tile and Grout Color

If you want to create a sleek and clean look for your backsplash and don’t want to show the pattern too much, using a matching grout color for your tiles will be the best option. This style works well with neutral colors. You can go with white tiles with white grout to create a fresh and bright backdrop or go all black to create a focal point.

Create a Contrasting Look

If you want to make a statement and create an eye-catching look, then go with contrasting colors for your grout lines and tiles. Using a contrasting look for your tiles and grout will emphasize the beautiful pattern which is created by the tiles and add more visual interest to your kitchen backsplash. For example, a black grout can be a perfect pair of your classic white subway tiles to add dimension!

Create a Cohesive Look

If these two options are not great for your project, you can find a balance between them with neutral shades. For example, you can finish your dark gray tiles with a light gray grout or pair your green tiles with gray grout. This way you can create an eye-catching but not too demanding look for your backsplash.

Should grout be darker or lighter than tile?

This is the most frequent question by people who will install a backsplash tile. Grout color is a personal preference. You can go with both lighter and darker grout colors according to what kind of appeal you want to create. Lighter colors, especially white can work with all different tile colors. However, lighter grout is more likely to show dirt and grease but you can keep them clean with a regular cleaning routine. On the other hand, darker shades are perfect for hiding the dirt and they are easier to clean than lighter shades.

Here, for example, our white diamond mosaic tile backsplash is complemented with a crisp white grout. As you can see here, this duo is a perfect addition to an all-white kitchen which consists of white shaker cabinets and quartz countertops.

Do I need to seal grout?

According to the type of your grout, you may not have to seal it! However, if you are using a cement based grout such as sanded or unsanded, you need to seal the grout. Grout is a mixture of cement and sand. That means it can absorb the water and this can cause mildew and moisture. Sealing the grout provides a protective layer that expands the lifespan of your backsplash. On the other hand, if you are going to use epoxy grout you don’t have to use a sealer because epoxy is a water-resistant material.

Steps

01- Mix the Grout

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and mix your grout powder with a putty knife in a bucket. Mix your grout until reaches the consistency of peanut butter. If you are working on a large area, you can mix enough grout to work in small sections this way you will prevent grout from hardening. (Don’t forget to cover your countertops with a plastic sheet to protect surfaces.)

02- Apply the Grout

To apply your mixture, spread your grout on the backsplash tiles with your grout float by using a 45-degree angle. Make this process in small sections and repeat it until fill all the gaps between the tiles.

03- Clean the Tile Surfaces

Wait for grunting to get semi-dry within 10 to 20 minutes. Make your tub full of warm water and gently wipe the excess grout on the tile surfaces away with a damp sponge. Finally, let the adhesive dry properly before you finish the installation for a few hours or better wait overnight. When you’re done with this, clean the surface with a wet sponge.

04- Seal the Grout

To apply a grout sealer, you need to wait at least 24 hours. Apply the sealer by using a clean cloth. If you want you can also use a brush to seal the grout lines.

05- Caulk

Finally, to prevent water leakage to the countertop just cap the back edge of your backsplash with your caulking gun, and corners and windows too. Now, that the caulk is completely dry, your work is done completely. Now you will are finally able to relish your kitchen with the different types of tile that you selected!

What happens if you don’t grout tile?

Grouting is a necessary process when installing a backsplash tile. It helps you to protect your tiles against water or food damage and prolongs the life of the tiles. Also, grout prevents tiles from moving and keeps tiles in place as it hardens. If you don’t like the grout look, there are several options but if you are going to use tiles, you need to apply grout. As an alternative, you can minimize the grout lines by using larger tiles. Using stone slabs or glass or metal sheets is also a good alternative to create a groutless backsplash. On the other hand, there are some groutless backsplash tile options.
