Material Options for Stove Backsplash Ideas

Grease, heat, moisture, and stains will always have a sneaky way of making it into backsplash tiles. That’s why, the choice of a backsplash material plays a significant role in the practicality. Glass, metals, ceramics, porcelain, and stone are the most popular and practical backsplash materials for kitchen designs. Each of these materials has its own benefits and drawbacks. Before purchasing the tiles, you need to learn the characteristics of the materials. Now let’s take a closer look at some of these popular materials.

Porcelain Backsplash Tiles

Porcelain backsplash tiles are durable and heat-resistant materials that offer tons of room for a creative kitchen wall décor. Coming in a wide range of colors, shapes, patterns and textures, porcelain tiles provide unmatched aesthetics. As an added bonus, these tiles can mimic natural stone materials like marble or wood, offering great alternatives for those looking for an easy-to-clean backsplash material that looks like a natural material as well. With these various alternatives, these tiles open up a world of creative opportunities, whether you prefer a modern or traditional kitchen.

Porcelain kitchen backsplash tiles are low-maintenance materials that save homeowners time and effort, making them a smart choice in high-traffic areas like the ones behind the stove. These tiles are known for their unparalleled durability. Even though porcelains are a type of ceramic, they are made with high quality clay and undergo kiln firing at a much higher temperature. This process makes them more durable than classic ceramic tiles. Aside from their durability, you won’t have to worry about unsightly stains or messy spills. The non-porous skın of the porcelain tiles provides easy-to-clean surfaces. Simply wipe them with a damp cloth and a mild soap, and they’ll shine like new.

Can I put a backsplash behind the stove only?

The primary function of a backsplash is to provide a shield to the walls from spills, food splashes, heat and moisture. Therefore it is advisable to install a backsplash in the kitchen especially behind the stove since it is more prone to damage! As for the other parts of the walls, it is possible to refrain from tiling, but in any case, it is better to come up with a protective layer. If you do not wish to use tiles, then there is always the possibility to install large stone slabs, or glass or metal plates.

How to install a backsplash behind a stove?

The installation process is the same as the classic backsplash area. Before the installation, you need to prepare the surfaces. First, clean the countertops and remove kitchen appliances. If, however, the old backsplash tiles are still in place you can remove them with the assistance of a chisel. Afterward, sand the wall until it is smooth and get it ready for the backsplash. Alternatively, you can also use plywood to apply to the backsplash area to provide a smooth finish.

The next thing is to cut cardboard of the same size as the backsplash area or any material strong enough to hold up the weight of the tiles. You can lay the tiles on this cardboard to see how they fit just to get a more solid idea. This way, you also have a better idea of how much you need to cut the tiles that will be placed on the edges/corners. You can also mark the electric layouts on the cardboard and arrange the tiles accordingly.

To cut the tiles, you can use a wet saw for cleaner edges. After you are done with cutting, you can spread the tile adhesive or mortar. To leave even gaps between the tiles, you can benefit from the spacers. Once you are done and the mortar is fully cured, you can remove the spacers.

The next step is to apply grout with a grouting float. While applying the grout, just move the float diagonally at a 45-degree angle and make sure that the grout fills the gaps. Clean the excess grout with a damp sponge before it dries. Use a soft cloth to dry the tiles and remove any possible dust and grout. The last thing you need to do is caulk the gap between the countertops and backsplash. You can easily manage with a caulk gun. This last step is important to prevent water or any other liquid spills from seeping through the gap, which might damage your walls in the long term.
