Unique Kitchen Island Design with Quartz Slabs

If you are looking for a more modern look, consider placing the range hood above the island! In this contemporary kitchen, the island is the real show stopper that creates a focal point at the heart of the room. Even though this island has already an attractive appearance thanks to its quartz slabs and two-tiered design, installing the range hood above it highlights more this area, enhancing impact.

How to install the range hood?

First, make sure that the power is turned off. Then, start with removing the old range hood by unscrewing all the wire nuts and disconnecting pieces from each other. At this time, it’s better to have a partner. While one is supporting the range hood, the other can loosen the screws.

The range hoods generally come with stoves. However, if you are buying them separately or the home improvement project only includes the range hood change, then make sure that the new hood is the same size as the stove and will cover it fully. The second thing to take notice of is to leave at least 24 inches between the stove and the hood. If you are replacing the old one where all the ductwork is complete, things will remain easy. But if you are doing everything all over again, then it gets more complicated in the next steps.

Installing the ducted range hood:

1) Plan the ductwork, keep the route as short as possible, and use the fewest elbows possible.
2) Measure 24-inches or the required distance between the stove and the hood and mark it to make sure where you will make the hole. If there is a template that comes with the instructions, then use it.
3) Inside your kitchen, drill an opening for the ductwork and the electrical wires. Make the duct connector slide into the ductwork and take care of the electrical connections. Install the ductwork to ensure that it leads to the outdoor safely.
4) Drill mounting brackets and screws into the wall or the cabinet ( if it is going to be hidden inside a cabinet)
5) Check if the vent matches the ductwork for vented range hoods. If not, do the necessary adjustments and screw the hood into the cabinet or the wall.
6) Outside the house, cut a hole 1-2 inches larger than the diameter of the duct. The cap needs to be attached to the duct to keep dirt and debris accumulated in the duct.
7) Run the duct back to the range hood, and if there are any uncovered connections, cover them with aluminum foil tape.
8) Make sure to fasten the cap outdoors and range hood indoors.
9) Turn the power on, just to make sure that everything functions smoothly.

Modern Kitchen with White Quartz Backsplash and Floating Shelves

Marble textures are always luxurious because of their natural veinings! Marble, on the other hand, is one of the most valuable materials and may cost a lot. So, if you’re going to integrate this material, why not utilize it for your range hood as well? In this manner, you can get a clean, continuous look with your quartz backsplash while also emphasizing the effect of the slabs. You can even use the same material to accent the range hood with floating shelves!

For a final touch, the gray marble countertop enhances the sense of luxury.

What is a convertible range hood?

In the market, you find three types of range hoods in terms of mechanical differences, which are ducted, non-ducted, and convertible range hoods. Vented or ducted range hoods expel the air to the outdoors, making less noise as the vent can be installed in the ductwork. But for the same reason, it is harder to install them.

Secondly, ductless range hoods house a fan that pulls the old air and filters it before releasing it back into the room. They are effective in trapping grease and odor particles, but in terms of performance, they are not efficient as the ducted ones.

Finally, a convertible range hood offers both systems. It means that a range hood either can be installed with external venting/ ductwork or ventless/ ductless installation. They come with fans and hookups that enable connecting them to a ventilation system and conversion kits bought separately. For the variety of uses, it offers, it is more expensive than the other ones.

How much cfm for the range hood?

The cubic feet per minute abbreviated as cfm refers to how much air the vent can pull each minute, or cubic feet per minute. Good-quality residential range hoods’ Cfm is generally between 300 and 500. However, this number changes. For example for gas stoves, it is required for cfm to be 600-900 because of the intense heat and smoke a gas stove produces. For Barbeque hoods, of course, this number rises even higher.

Range Hood Applications in Different Kitchen Styles

As range hoods occupy a great amount of space on the walls, the way they are presented makes a lot of difference in terms of maintaining the kitchen’s design style. In transitional kitchens, stainless steel hood is sometimes kept as they are or sometimes hidden in a more classical fixture. Farmhouse, rustic, and traditional kitchens favor bulky range hood dressings, while modern kitchens employ rather sleek lines and use the same material of the backsplash to envelop them just to create a clutter-free look. Now let’s look into the range of hood applications in different kitchen styles more closely.

Modern Range Hood Ideas

Modern kitchens love clutter-free looks which makes it necessary to hide the range hood in marble, wood, and quartz-clad dressings. Though, wood applications are recontextualized through a refined architectural language than rather bringing something completely rustic. Overall, modern kitchens are experts at hiding hoods without letting them break up the streamlined look.

Design tip: This type may not work on a four-burner range, but it is ideal for this conventional cooktop.

How high above range should hood be?

Generally, it is recommended to leave a space of 20″ to 24″ between the hood’s bottom and the cooktop. For gas stoves, the distance differs slightly, ranging from 24″ to 30″. But this goes for the indoor hoods. For outdoor hoods, they can be 36 to 42 inches above the cooktop. Because of the intense heat of the BBQ grills, it required an extra distance. And it is always better to check the manufacturer’s instructions and see the specified or advised distances.

How to clean range hood?

Cleaning a range hood is important; because if you stop taking care of them, they also stop taking care of the air as their performance slows down and starts producing bad smells. As a range hood is made up of different parts, each part requires separate cleaning. To clean outside of the range hood, you can use baking soda, vinegar solution, or any soap or detergent of your choice. To clean it, rub the dirt and grease away with a brush and sponge and dry it with a soft towel not to leave any watermarks or particles on the surface. While using vinegar, you can just spray it to diminish its strong interaction with the surface.

For the filters, it is recommended to detach them from the hood and clean them separately for effective cleaning. While cleaning the filter, first get rid of the accumulated dust or debris stuck in it. Then, you can again mix baking soda with water and soak the brush in the mixture and brush the inner area of the filter. Then spray a vinegar solution and clean it with a microfiber cloth.

How to vent a range hood?

The key issue about how to vent a range hood is that you vent the hood outside your home through the ceiling or wall. First, decide on the application area because this process includes cutting and drilling to vent the hood outdoors. Secondly, you need to build a road for the ductwork. Check the CFM of your range hood and make the hole in according to the suggested size for specified CFMs. For example, 400 CFM requires 4 inches, while 600 CFM demands 6 inches hole, which becomes 8 inches for 900 CFM.

While bearing this in mind, start building a road for the ductwork. It is recommended not to use more than 2-3 elbows to keep the air circulation better. Just think of the shortest way to orient your ductwork outside by using the fewest elbows. It will ensure the longevity and efficiency of the vent hood. Also, the ducts shouldn’t be longer than 30 inches for the air to circulate smoothly without encountering much resistance.

To get back to the cutting part, make the hole and cut it 1-2 inches larger than your ductwork to thread your ductwork to the outdoors much more easily. Drill a hole just to leave yourself a clue around which point the duct is centered.

The following steps continue outdoors. So go outside of your home and install a cap at the end of the duct. The cap provides a barrier blocking debris and dirt from getting trapped in the duct. The rest is connecting all the pieces.

Hidden Range Hood Ideas

If you don’t like how hoods look and occupy space in kitchens, there are a couple of strategies that you can employ to hide the range hoods. Aligned with the rest of the cabinets, they almost completely remain out of sight. As for the ductless range hood, slide-out options provide great and budget-friendly alternatives.

What type of range hood is best?

When choosing a range hood, the first thing to consider is what kind of stove you are using and secondly, whether you are looking for a ducted, duct-free, or convertible range hood which can act like both, and thirdly, what your budget is. These three things are worth considering before deciding what type of range hood is the best for you. If you are cooking a lot, a ducted hood will serve you better, for example.

The other things to notice could be its aesthetic features, how loud it is, and what its CFM (cubic feet per minute) is. Just to make you more familiar with certain trusted brands, below we share some of the more cited and mentioned range hood types:
