Gray Recessed Panel Cabinets with Wood Countertop

Do you dislike designs with a lot of visual drama? Then, like in this particular kitchen, it is preferable to stick more closely to the bright side of the color spectrum. It has a light, airy feel and is distinguished by barely noticeable gray cabinetry with bluish undertones. The backsplash made of white-blue encaustic tiles is so striking that it steals the show. Butcher block worktops, a skirted farmhouse sink, display cabinets, and floating shelves that add light to the room complete the look. The upper cabinets’ glass fronts allow natural light to reflect off them and bounce around the space, while the chrome-finished hardware punctuates the cabinets and gives them a sense of movement and brightness.

Square Tile Backsplash

The backsplash is visible between the cabinets and the appliances, but its significance should not be overlooked. It can be used as a subtle unifier or to draw attention away from the sink and oven stovetop. After all, a backsplash’s beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One of the ways to draw all the attention is using a square tile backsplash.

Classic Square Tiles with a Modern Twist

Square tiles are a timeless classic that has never gone out of style. While the usual size was 20×20 or 33×33 cm until a few decades ago, the most common square size for years has been 60×60 cm, which can be used in both big and small spaces. The tendency in current interior design ideas is for huge sizes. The backsplash area is in 60 cm height, so 60×60 tiles can be effortlessly fitted to your backsplash wall. Large square tiles, on the other hand, produce fewer seams, giving surfaces – floors or walls – a sense of continuity that extends spaces and volumes. Make the joints practically unnoticeable to emphasize this effect. This is simple with rectified square tiles, which have straight edges and can be grouted to match the tiles with minimal seams (2 mm). You can have a seamless surface with a square tile backsplash.

There are an infinite number of shapes, patterns, styles, and colors to pick from when it comes to choosing tile for your kitchen backsplash. It’s no surprise that deciding where to begin may be daunting. A square tile backsplash might get lost in the bustle between traditional subway tile and trendy geometric designs. However, we’ve seen that this adaptable form has resurfaced. A square tile backsplash is a tried-and-true option that works well in a variety of settings, from classic to contemporary.

Square Subway Tile Backsplash

As you may have guessed, the first subway tiles appeared underground—in New York City’s subway system. Designers Christopher Grand La Farge and George C. Heins were presented with a difficult assignment when it initially opened in 1904: create a surface that was easy to maintain while yet seeming familiar, comfortable, and welcoming to city people utilizing subterranean transit for the first time.

The subway stations were clean, polished, and bright thanks to their solution: tiles with slightly curved edges and a glossy finish. Subway tiles emerged from a Victorian-era obsession with cleanliness. They’re stain-resistant, simple to clean, and reflect light thanks to their glossy, glazed finish. They immediately gained a reputation for being practical and sanitary, and they were the preferred wall covering in a variety of settings, including bathrooms, kitchens, and butcher shops. These similar characteristics make them a suitable alternative for modern kitchens, bathrooms, and other applications. Thanks to these abilities, nowadays you can have a square subway tile backsplash in your kitchen!

How to install a square tile backsplash?

1. Determine the square footage and consequently how many tiles you’ll need by measuring the height and breadth of the backsplash. To account for waste, add 10% to the total.
2. Begin by installing the backsplash in the most apparent area. It might be a window, a corner, or an open edge. Begin there and work your way up. The most visible area of the wall will be well-centered in this manner.
3. Install the tiles along with the countertop first, then cut the top tiles into place. The cut tiles will be less obvious as a result of this. Spread the mastic using the trowel, being careful to use the toothed side of the trowel to go over it. The teeth ensure that the correct quantity of mastic is applied to the wall.
4. To fix the tile securely, press it into the mastic and softly tap it with the rubber mallet. Maintain consistency in the junction lines between tiles.
5. Return to complete the cutting after all of the full tiles have been installed. Slide the tile carefully through the wet saw following your mark to cut it.
6. Before contacting the tile, wait at least 12 hours.
7. Start by mixing the grout according to the package directions. Sliding diagonally over the joints at a 45-degree angle with the grout float, force the grout into the joints.
8. Clean the tile as much as possible with a moist sponge. You’ll have to repeat the process multiple times, each time using clean water.
9. To eliminate the grout haze, wipe the tile with a dry cloth.

How to grout a square tile backsplash?

After the tile glue has fully dried, the final step in installing ceramic wall tile is grouting. It’s not difficult to do a good job at grouting, but it’s much simpler to do a bad job. One key to success is to keep in mind that grout has a short working life and can dry up quickly. Grout will set and become difficult to work with or remove if you grout an area that is too large. The key is to work in tiny parts of 5 to 10 square feet or fewer so you can finish the essential processes before moving on to the next section. Let’s look at how to grout a square tile backsplash;

Pre-Seal

1- Pre-seal porous tile or stone with a suitable sealer before grouting to prevent the grout from staining the tile. To assist in preventing the grout from adhering to porous tiles, softly dampen the surface of the tiles with clean water before grouting. Allow the sealant to dry completely before beginning the grouting process.

2- To make premixed grout, use a small-margin trowel or a putty knife to stir the grout in the tub. The mixture should be completely combined and have a smooth, toothpaste-like texture.

To make powdered grout, combine the grout powder and water in a plastic bucket, stirring with a margin trowel as directed by the manufacturer. Slowly drizzle in the water until it achieves a toothpaste-like consistency. If you add too much water, the grout will turn soupy, and you’ll have to add more grout powder to get it back to the right consistency. Stop mixing after the grout has reached a toothpaste-like consistency. Allow the grout to cure for about 10 minutes to absorb all of the water.

3- Fill the joints with grout using a rubber grout float across a 5- to 10-square-foot area. To begin, use one end of the grout float to scoop a load of grout onto the float. Grout should not cover the whole float. Working from the bottom of the area up, apply the grout to the tile while holding the float at a 45-degree angle. Sweep the grout into the joints diagonally across the tile. To finish the first part, reload the float and proceed to apply the grout. Rinse the float in a pail of warm water regularly. As required, empty and replace the bucket with clean water.

Allow the grout to dry

4- Wait around 20 minutes before using a grout sponge to remove the grout residue (do not use a standard kitchen sponge, which has sharp edges and corners that pull the grout out of the joints). Soak the sponge in a pail of hot, clean water for a few minutes, then wring it out until it’s almost dry. Wipe a clean face or edge of the sponge across the tiles in a diagonal motion. After each pass, switch to a clean side of the sponge. Wring out the sponge after rinsing it in water. To clean the entire first portion of grouted tiles, repeat the process.

5- As needed, use your finger or a grout joint tool to smooth out the grout joints. The purpose is to smooth out imperfections and form the joints to a constant concave shape and depth. For joints up to 3/16 inches wide, use your index finger; for larger ones, use a grout joint tool. Remove extra grout with your finger (or the tool) as you go across the vertical and horizontal joints.

6- Allow for 1 hour of drying time or until the grout is solid. Using a clean rag or a microfiber cloth gently wet with water, remove the haze from the tile surfaces. Wipe away any remaining haze with a clean, warm cloth, washing it regularly. Clean the tooled joints and any exposed grout lines around the tile installation’s edges lightly.

7- After the grout has cured fully, clean the tile once again. Clean cheesecloth can be used. Buff the tile to a gleaming sheen.

Large Square Tile Backsplash

Large square tiles can be in 16”, 18, and 24”. Varied tile sizes have different aesthetics and affect how you feel in a space. Large-format tiles, with a width or length of at least 12-18 inches, may make a space look larger and are becoming more popular for walls and floors. Traditional houses can benefit from their ageless, classic appeal. Because there are fewer grout lines, any area seems more open and clean, and it has a higher-end appearance. As a result, adding a large square tile backsplash may give a kitchen more premium air while also making it appear sleeker.
