How to install a geometric tile backsplash?
For the tile installation, you need a sander, sponge, painter’s tape, pencil, thin-set mortar, notched trowel, spacers, level, tape measure, wet saw or tile cutter, grout float, non sanded grout, grout sealer, caulk, and caulk gun. Before starting the installation, you need to clean the backsplash area and the back of the tiles to achieve a perfect look. Sand the wall of any imperfections and wipe the walls with a sponge to remove stains on the surface.
Define the boundaries with painter’s tape. Then lay the tiles on the counter to plan the tile layout. This way you can find which pieces are needed to cut and avoid unmatching pieces. If you are using ceramic tiles a simple tile cutter will do the job but natural stones like marble need to be cut with a wet saw to avoid cracks. To end the backsplash, if you are going to use a Schluter strip, first install the strip with a thin-set mortar where you’d like your backsplash to stop. If you want to use bullnose tiles, first you need to install the tiles.
Installation
Apply the thin-set mortar with a notched trowel in small sections and start to lay the tiles on the mortar. Keep doing these steps until cover the whole area. Use spaces to secure the tiles and allow the thin-set mortar to set. Then, apply the grout with a grout trowel by using 45 angle motions. After filling the all blanks, wipe down the surface of the tile with a damp sponge and let the grout dry at least overnight. Once, the grout is dried, clean the tile surfaces with a cloth to remove the haze.
For preventing staining, apply a grout sealer. And for a final step, caulk the area where the backsplash meets with the counter to reduce staining.
