How do you tile stacked subway tile?
A stacked subway tile backsplash is one of the easiest subway tile treatments to install. Unlike the running bond pattern, you just need to stack the tiles right on top of each other to create a grid pattern. For the tile installation, you need a sander, sponge, painter’s tape, pencil, thin-set mortar, notched trowel, spacers, level, tape measure, wet saw or tile cutter, grout float, non-sanded grout, grout sealer, caulk, and caulk gun.
Preparation
Once receive the equipment and materials, you need to prepare the surface for installation. Clean the wall surfaces and the back of the tiles and sand the wall for any imperfections. Then wipe the walls with a sponge to remove stains on the surface. Remove the electrical switches and define the boundaries with painter’s tape. Before the installation, planning the layout of the tiles will help you to complete the job smoothly. To define the layout, lay the tiles on the counter. Also, this way you can find which pieces need to be cut. If you are using ceramic or porcelain tiles, you can use a simple tile cutter. On the other hand, if you are using natural stone tiles such as marble, you need to use a more professional tool like a wet saw with a diamond blade to avoid cracks.
Installation
For the installation, prepare the thin-set mortar according to manufacturer instructions then apply it with a notched trowel in small sections to the wall. Applying the adhesive in small sections will avoid drying the adhesive until it covers the wall. Then you can lay the tiles on the mortar. Use spaces to secure the tiles and allow the thin-set mortar to set. Also, using a laser level on both horizontal and vertical lines will help you lay the tiles in a straight line. Once the mortar is dried, apply the grout with a grout trowel by using 45-angle motions, and continue until filling all the blanks between the tiles. After 10 minutes, wipe down the tile surfaces to remove the haze and leave the tiles at least overnight to dry. To prevent staining, apply a grout sealer.
For a final step, caulk the area where the backsplash meets with the counter to reduce staining.

How to grout stacked subway tile backsplash?

First, prepare the grout according to the manufacturer’s directions. To prepare the mix, you will need a bucket, water and non-sanded grout. Once your grout mix is ready, apply the grout with a grout trowel by using 45-angle motions and continue until fill all the blanks between the tiles. Once all the blanks are filled with grout, grab a wet sponge and wipe the tile surfaces to remove the haze.
For the final step, you need to seal the grout lines. To do this, there are several tools that you can use: a brush, foam roller, or a cloth. Take the tool that you want, dip it into the sealer, and apply it to the grout lines. Once you have done all the lines, wait thirty minutes then apply a second coat. If there is a sealant on the tile surfaces, you can wipe it down with a damp cloth!
