How to grout a square tile backsplash?
After the tile glue has fully dried, the final step in installing ceramic wall tile is grouting. It’s not difficult to do a good job at grouting, but it’s much simpler to do a bad job. One key to success is to keep in mind that grout has a short working life and can dry up quickly. Grout will set and become difficult to work with or remove if you grout an area that is too large. The key is to work in tiny parts of 5 to 10 square feet or fewer so you can finish the essential processes before moving on to the next section. Let’s look at how to grout a square tile backsplash;
Pre-Seal
1- Pre-seal porous tile or stone with a suitable sealer before grouting to prevent the grout from staining the tile. To assist in preventing the grout from adhering to porous tiles, softly dampen the surface of the tiles with clean water before grouting. Allow the sealant to dry completely before beginning the grouting process.
2- To make premixed grout, use a small-margin trowel or a putty knife to stir the grout in the tub. The mixture should be completely combined and have a smooth, toothpaste-like texture.
To make powdered grout, combine the grout powder and water in a plastic bucket, stirring with a margin trowel as directed by the manufacturer. Slowly drizzle in the water until it achieves a toothpaste-like consistency. If you add too much water, the grout will turn soupy, and you’ll have to add more grout powder to get it back to the right consistency. Stop mixing after the grout has reached a toothpaste-like consistency. Allow the grout to cure for about 10 minutes to absorb all of the water.
3- Fill the joints with grout using a rubber grout float across a 5- to 10-square-foot area. To begin, use one end of the grout float to scoop a load of grout onto the float. Grout should not cover the whole float. Working from the bottom of the area up, apply the grout to the tile while holding the float at a 45-degree angle. Sweep the grout into the joints diagonally across the tile. To finish the first part, reload the float and proceed to apply the grout. Rinse the float in a pail of warm water regularly. As required, empty and replace the bucket with clean water.
Allow the grout to dry
4- Wait around 20 minutes before using a grout sponge to remove the grout residue (do not use a standard kitchen sponge, which has sharp edges and corners that pull the grout out of the joints). Soak the sponge in a pail of hot, clean water for a few minutes, then wring it out until it’s almost dry. Wipe a clean face or edge of the sponge across the tiles in a diagonal motion. After each pass, switch to a clean side of the sponge. Wring out the sponge after rinsing it in water. To clean the entire first portion of grouted tiles, repeat the process.
5- As needed, use your finger or a grout joint tool to smooth out the grout joints. The purpose is to smooth out imperfections and form the joints to a constant concave shape and depth. For joints up to 3/16 inches wide, use your index finger; for larger ones, use a grout joint tool. Remove extra grout with your finger (or the tool) as you go across the vertical and horizontal joints.
6- Allow for 1 hour of drying time or until the grout is solid. Using a clean rag or a microfiber cloth gently wet with water, remove the haze from the tile surfaces. Wipe away any remaining haze with a clean, warm cloth, washing it regularly. Clean the tooled joints and any exposed grout lines around the tile installation’s edges lightly.
7- After the grout has cured fully, clean the tile once again. Clean cheesecloth can be used. Buff the tile to a gleaming sheen.
