How to cut glass and metal backsplash?

Mosaic tiles are very popular options for kitchen backsplashes. Since they come in a mesh backer, they are very easy to install. But the tricky part comes when you need to cut mosaic tiles, especially those that combine more than one material. And if you don’t cut them correctly, it can break the whole backsplash look.

When it comes to cutting tiles, each material requires specific equipment. For basic glass tiles, a carbide-tipped glass cutter can be enough. Or for the common metal backsplashes, you can score the line with a metal scoring tool and then snap the sheet. However, if you are going to use a backsplash with multi-materials that needs intricate cuts, you may need a more professional cutting tool like a wet saw with a diamond blade. A wet saw will prevent cracking and chipping and give you the best results.

However, if you don’t have a wet saw and looking for something more affordable, the best technique for safely cutting mosaic tile will be to remove the individual tiles from the mesh and cut each piece separately. You can cut the glass tiles with a manual tile cutter and metal pieces with a hack saw. Once you finish the cutting process, then you need to re-attach the tiles on the mesh. To preserve the unity and the original pattern of the mosaic, you will need spacers when re-attaching the tiles.

White Glass and Metal Tile Backsplash

Without a doubt, white kitchen backsplashes are trendy for some reason! They are timeless and go on to make any space appear larger than it might actually be. Marble, ceramic and porcelain are common tiles and glass is one of the most used types. As well as being eco-friendly and pore-free, glass tiles are easily cleaned surfaces that kitchen backsplashes require. With their ability to get customized, white glass tiles prove an excellent match for metal chips. Thus, a white glass and metal tile backsplash should be chosen by those who want to bring some statement-maker design with bright appeal into their home interior!

Light Gray Cabinets with White Countertops and Gold Hardware

Geometric tile backsplashes create a statement look right away, even if they come in white shades. And when the glass and metal materials meet for this pattern, the result is just beautiful! This modern kitchen, for example, employs a white glass backsplash with metal accents. While harmonizing with the white countertops, these backsplash tiles also reach up to the ceiling to create a clean and fresh backdrop and enhance the space feel. The gray cabinets complement the cool effect of the metal tiles. The gold cabinet hardware makes a final touch and adds a much-needed warmth.

Modern Glass and Metal Tile Backsplash

A backsplash is an essential part of the kitchen design that links all elements together and creates a protective layer on wall spaces. Modern kitchens feature clean and modern lines, flat finished surfaces that have no joint or edge details as well as functionality. If you design a modern backsplash, therefore it would be faithful to these preferences! Even though the mixture of glass and metal tiles is a little bold for modern style, this doesn’t mean that you can not use it. By using geometrical shape tiles, slick finishes, and a neutral color palette, you get a modern glass mosaic tile backsplash in minutes.

How to install glass and metal tile backsplash?

As far as the fixing of backsplash tiles is concerned, mosaic tiles are considered to be one of the easiest materials to install. These tiles often come in sheets with a mesh backing that makes the installation process a breeze. Before the installation, you should prepare equipment and materials.

What You’ll Need?
  • Notched trowel
  • Tape measure
  • Rubber float
  • Utility knife
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Tile nipper or wet saw
  • Mosaic tile sheets
  • Mortar
  • Grout, grout sealer, and haze remover
  • Tile spacers
Preparation:

After collecting these equipment and materials, the process of preparing a working surface should be initiated. Second, specify the limits of the backsplash space and make sure that the wall is clean, and dry without any dust particles oil stains, or unevenness. In case some cracks or holes are present in the wall, you need to rectify them prior to installation. In addition, cover the countertops with a plastic sheet to avoid damage.

Plan the tile layout after cleaning. A planned layout before installation will provide more accurate results. This will also enable you to select the pattern and determine where installation should start. Mosaic tile installations begin in the middle of a backsplash location, but if masonry determines that according to the reliefs and forms of this tile as possible everything begins on either bottom edge or at focal point.

Installation:

Spread a tin-set mortar with a notched trowel. Work in sections to prevent drying of the mortar. Press the first sheet into the mortar and place the spacers to maintain consistent grout lines. Do these steps until cover the whole area. If it is needed, cut the tiles and fill in the edges and corners. Allow the thinset to dry completely, typically overnight.

Grouting:

Mix the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For 1/8-inch or narrower grout lines, use an unsanded grout, and for wider than 1/8-inch grout lines, use sanded grout. Spread the grout over the top of the tile with the rubber float by holding the float at a 45-degree angle to the surface. Allow the grout to harden and remove the haze on the tiles with a damp sponge. For a final step, seal the grout by brushing or rolling the entire surface.
