How do you tile a square mosaic backsplash?

The installation of square mosaic tiles is similar to other materials. Before the installation, you need to gather the tools and equipment that you need.

What you will need?
  • Tile
  • Spacers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Level
  • Thin-set mortar
  • Utility knife
  • Tape measure
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Grout and grout sealer
  • Notched trowel
  • Caulk and caulk gun
  • Grout float
  • Tile cutter or wet saw
Preparation

Once you have gathered all these types of equipment, you can start by making sure your surface is even and clean. This way you can ensure seamless installation. Then cover the countertops with a plastic sheet to avoid any damage. Before the installation, you can lay the tiles on the counter to define the layout and make sure you have enough supplies and you will get the best results.

Since most of the mosaic tiles come with a mesh backing, the installation process will be much easier than laying individual tiles. If some tiles need to be cut, you can cut them with proper cutting tools according to your material. You can check our ‘How to cut backsplash tiles?’ post to get more information about the different types of cutting tools.

Installation

Once you have prepared your area, it is time to install tiles. Apply the mortar on the wall with a notched trowel. Work with small sections to avoid mortar drying. Then press the first sheet of mosaic into the mortar. After the mosaic panels are in place, tap the tile with the float to make sure it is uniformly and securely fastened to the wall. Apply these steps until cover the wall surface entirely.

After laying the tiles, apply the grout on the tiles with a grout trowel by using 45-degree motions. Repeat it until fills all the gaps. To mix the grout, follow the manufacturer’s directions and use a margin trowel.

Sealing and Cleaning

For the last part, cleaning, sealing, and caulking are all part of the final process. Wait 10-15 minutes to set the mortar and remove the haze on the tile surfaces with a damp cloth. And let the grout thoroughly cure as directed by the manufacturer before sealing it. Then, apply the grout sealer on the grout lines. Most of the backsplash materials like ceramic, porcelain, or glass don’t require sealing but if you are using natural stone tiles, you need to add a coat of sealant on the tiles too. Finally, apply a tiny bead of caulk to the seams at cabinet junctions and in any corner.
