Modern Gray Glass Tile Backsplash

With so many backsplash glass tiles available in this color family, the modern gray glass tile backsplash is one of the most versatile design choices you can make for your kitchen. Allow a high-gloss surface to reflect the light, making your already bright and airy kitchen even more so. Despite the widespread belief that gray is uninteresting, we are here to disprove it! A modern gray glass tile backsplash may provide depth and a tad of soft warmth to any design thanks to its soothing neutral tone. It is equally adaptable as plain white!

Gray is one of the desired hues and, in our opinion, the pinnacle of neutral design trends since there are so many things you can do with it. This includes using it as a backsplash for modern glass tiles. When you add a modern gray glass tile backsplash to a wooden kitchen, you quickly create a focal point. A herringbone modern gray glass tile backsplash in a white kitchen may offer a sense of movement and a creative design without the drama if your buyer is less at ease with too dramatic statements.

How to install a glass tile backsplash?

A glass tile backsplash requires some time and work to install, but it provides a dash of color and a new dimension to the wall and space. Check your abilities to complete this project. Here are some pointers, detailed directions, a list of the supplies and tools you’ll need, price ranges, safety warnings, and more.

Preparations

Verify that your wall is flat and smooth, devoid of ripples, uneven patches, or gaps. If there are, you will need to either build a backer board over the section of the wall where you intend to place a backsplash or apply a skim layer of drywall compound to level out the area, let it fully dry, and then sand it. By doing this, you can guarantee that the tile will cling to a flat, solid surface that won’t wave or protrude in any particular spots.

Safety First

All outlets in the backsplash installation area should have their circuits turned off. Find the circuit breaker for the electrical outlets in the room where the backsplash will be installed by heading to your main circuit breaker box, which is often located outside the garage area. The power to that region of your house is turned off by doing this. Use a circuit tester to confirm that the electricity is off at each outlet after turning the breaker off. Be cautious not to touch any wires inside the open outlets with your fingers or any other objects, even while the breaker is off.

Tools

-Laser Level
-Drywall Knife
-Scissors
-Tape Measure
-Hammer
-Rubber Grout Float

Materials

-Glass Tiles
-Drywall Compound
-Pre-mixed thin-set mortar
-Painter’s tape
-Scrap Cardboard
-Grout
-Scrap one-by-two or one-by-four lumber
-Grout
-Plastic Sheeting
-Caulk

Cleanup and Wall Repair

Tape plastic sheeting down to the countertop’s surface. The wall must be completely level and devoid of any ridges or depressions. Using a drywall sander equipped with a drywall sanding screen or sandpaper, smooth down any imperfections. Apply drywall compound to cracks and depressions to smooth them out.

A Countertop Spacer Should Be Made

A 1/8-inch gap must be left between the bottom of the bottom row of glass tiles and the top of the countertops. As a spacer, a single layer of discarded cardboard attached to the counter works great.

Prepare Tiles

Find the middle of your tile installation area using the tape measure. Shoot the vertical line of the laser level here. Cut the mesh backing holding the tiles together using scissors. Use a tile cutter to cut the tile to the proper vertical size and to make any necessary cutouts for electrical outlets, similar to the previous step.

Apply Thinset on the Wall

Add the thin-set to the wall in three steps, working in 2-foot square chunks to avoid the thin-set from drying on you. Pull out the thin-set mortar with the notch trowel and fan it across the wall with the flat edge. Keep your thickness at around 1/4 inch. Pull horizontally across the thin set using the notched edge. Thinset that is overused will adhere to the trowel or drip onto the surface. Use the broad, flat side of the trowel to smooth out the grooves in the thinset.

Set Up the First Row of Tiles

Place a sheet of tiles sitting on the countertop spacer on the thinset at the centerline. The sheet should have one of its edges on the centerline. The tiles are fixed in place by tapping the sheet with a hammer and a short scrap piece by one-by-four.

Complete the Tile Field

From side to side, keep adding tile sheets to the tile field. Move on to the upper row after finishing the bottom row. To flatten the tiles, particularly where the tile sheets meet, give them a few light taps with the one-by-four and the hammer.

Grout

Use the rubber grout float to apply grout once the tile has finished curing in the thinset. To prevent removing the grout, move the float diagonally across the tiles. Use a grout haze cleanser to remove the haze once the grout has cured.

Caulk The Tile

The tile’s corners should be caulked. If necessary, switch out the outlets with extenders. Your electrical outlet cover plates can sit flush on the surface with the help of extenders.
