Is marble backsplash hard to keep clean?

You do not have to worry about the cleaning of the marble. Yes, it is a porous material and it can absorb liquids but sealing provides an easy to clean surface for the marble. For a daily cleaning routine, warm water, dish soap, and a microfiber cloth will be enough. For more stubborn stains, you can prepare a mix with baking soda and water. But you need to be careful not to use abrasive cleaning products. These products can create permanent damage on the marble surfaces.

How to install a marble backsplash?

Whether you are working with tiny marble tiles or a giant marble slab, before the installation, you need to prepare the backsplash area. Cleaning and sanding the area will provide a smooth and solid surface which is good for the installation. Once the cleaning is done, define the backsplash area with painter’s tape and remove the electrical switches.

If you are working with tiles, lay the tiles on the counter to define the layout. This way you can avoid unmatching pieces and find which tiles are needed to be cut. Because marble is a natural stone, a simple tile cutter is not good for it. You need to use a wet saw with a diamond blade.

Once the preparation is done, now you can install the tiles. Apply the thin-set mortar with a notched trowel in small sections and start to lay the tiles on the mortar. Place the spacers between the tiles to secure them and do these steps until cover all surfaces. Wait at least overnight to set the tiles in place. After the mortar is dried, remove the spacers. Because marble is a natural stone, you need to seal the tiles before grouting. Apply the stone sealer with a cloth. Then, the grout with a grout trowel by using 45 angle motions. Wait 10 seconds and clean the tile surfaces with a damp cloth to remove the haze. Once the grout fully dried, wipe down the surfaces again. For a final step, caulk the area where the backsplash meets with the counter to reduce staining.

If you are working with a marble slab, the procedure will be the same with the tiles but you will attach one piece instead of many small tiles. But, you need to use a strong backer material that is screwed into the studs because marble slabs are heavy materials.
